For my non-Spanish-speaking followers, an urban legend about a woman in Madrid who mysteriously gave birth to a cat. I checked out the Google Translate version and it’s surprisingly accurate and readable.

- Graduate Colleague: You should consider changing your Facebook profile picture, some people might think it's unprofessional.
- Me: What? How is it unprofessional?
- GC: You have a beer.
- Me: It's a cider. Strongbow.
- GC: So?
- Me: So a cider is classier than a beer. And I'm not even drinking it, and my head is turned. That could be anyone with black hair.
- GC: It has your name on it!
- Me: Do you know how many people have black hair? Like billions.
- I'm kind of over unsolicited professionalization tips from random graduate students, so I just kept messing with him until he got the point and left me the hell alone, but I really resent the idea that I need to worry about what colleagues and potential employers may think about legal, socially-acceptable things I do in my free time. There is absolutely nothing wrong with an adult having an alcoholic beverage (particularly when said beverage is just sitting on a table near me and I'm neither drinking, touching, nor looking at it), and the idea that professionals need to cater their social behavior to the most puritanical common denominator is ridiculous. Of course it's unwise to post about illegal activities, overt racism, or things of that ilk, but policing everyday, widely-accepted behavior is absurd. Behaving as though we need to be chaste, abstinent, and blandly un-opinionated in order to get a job helps perpetuate bad employment and hiring practices.
