A tidy desk purged of extraneous material is essential to productive work. Everything on my desk is useful. The computer provides storage for my writing and, via its wifi connection, a link to the outside world. The lamp illuminates. The cat brings solace. The ceramic jar stores my writing utensils. The coral, taken from the beach in Miami where I spent several happy years, is a reminder of that happiness, as is the clear plastic hedgehog, a souvenir from a trip to Japan. The antique ivory emperor sternly reminds me to continue my important research on the development of a global economy in the sixteenth-century Pacific Rim, and the two books assist in this endeavor. The animal bones, collected from hikes, represent mortality. The sketchbook, creativity. The pen’s utilitarian purpose is obvious.
