What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
“Land” from Horses. I was maybe 13 or 14 and I was completely blown away. I didn’t know music could sound like that, or that women made music like that. I’d like to say it changed my life, but I actually grew up to become a historian of the early modern Pacific world, so its effect on my life path was probably negligible.
What is your favorite song of 8?
“The Sun Before the Darkness” from Paradise Discotheque. It’s pretty good shit, you should give it a listen.
What kind of impact has 1 left on your life?
I had a sleepover with them once (non-sexual). I had an awful migraine and around 5AM I started having lurid, detailed fantasies about smothering Lou Barlow with a pillow because he was snoring to wake the dead and every snore cut through me like a knife.
What are your favorite lyrics of 4?
I will pass on this one. I had quite enough of scrawling Smiths lyrics everywhere in high school, thank you very much.
How many times have you seen 5 live ?
Twice, with full intentions of seeing them again this fall. Both times I was mobbed by middle-aged heshers asking me if I had an “old soul.” Hell no, my soul is immature as fuck. It likes Rush, for Christ’s sake.
No matter how tight my pants are or how many skinny hipsters I fuck, my love of Rush will always be there to remind me of how direly uncool I am.
What is your favorite song by 7?
“Radio Friendly Unit Shifter” is a very mellow and chill song, suitable for inclusion on a mix CD for a twee girl.
Is there any song by 3 that makes you sad?
Once I got really drunk and cried to “Hit So Hard.” I don’t know why either.
What is your favorite song by 9?
“Moonlight on Vermont” from Trout Mask Replica. My dad once got me a book of 60’s sheet music for my piano and that song was on there, and when I got old enough to actually hunt down music myself I picked up a copy. Then I understood why it always sounded weird when I played it myself.
When did you first get into 2?
When I was 16, I went up to Michigan to visit some of my father’s relatives. We visited a bunch of weird little towns that still had a ton of their original immigrant-population culture, and one of them was a German town called Frankenmuth. The old German schoolhouse had been converted into a flea market, and in a darkened room on the second floor, I found a bin of records for twenty-five cents each. The Tubes’ What Do You Want From…Live was one of them and I got it completely on impulse because the cover design looked cool. I had a crush on Fee Waybill for months afterwards. In related news, no one asked me to the junior prom that year.
How did you get into 3?
Oh, the same way every preteen girl in the 1990s did.
What is your favorite song by 4?
I’ve been listening to them a lot more in preparation for my trip to Mexico, and I have to say I really like “I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish” right now.
How many times have you seen 10 live?
Ugh, none, because David Byrne will never get that giant stick removed from his ass.
What is a good memory concerning 6?
When I first came to Spain, I would spend hours upon hours wandering around Sevilla alone, listening to Horses on my iPod. Every street in that city has a song and a chorus for me. The two are inextricably linked.
Is there a song by 2 that makes you sad?
Nobody has ever been saddened by a Tubes song. It is physically impossible.
What is your favorite song of 1?
Not actually a Sebadoh song, but last month “Brand New Love” from the Weed Forestin’ reissue was stuck in my head for a solid week.
Bonus question: Do you actually listen to any bands that debuted in this century?
