This line always rubbed me the wrong way, even as a kid. Somehow I always knew that appropriating an oppressed group from a position of privilege was creepy and dehumanizing, even if the intentions were good (which I have no doubt of; the intended subtext here is obviously “Fuck homophobia/I feel guilt over my privilege”). It reminds me of the liner notes to Jane’s Addiction’s Ritual de lo Habitual—at one point Perry Farrell dramatically proclaims that he wished he’d been born black, or a woman. I remember reading that at ten or eleven and being massively creeped out. Why couldn’t Kurt and Perry just wish that there was no homophobia, or racism, or sexism, instead of wishing that they could take on an oppressed identity they knew nothing about?
